Who Owns My Medical Record?

In Canada, physicians must adhere to provincial regulations and medical college requirements that apply to almost every area of a medical practice.  When it comes to patient medical records, physicians across Canada are required to securely keep and store the original medical record.  However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a copy. As one of Canada’s largest repositories of medical records, RSRS stores records for physicians, clinics and hospitals and then manages the secure transfer of records to patients, new physicians and authorized third party requestors.

Getting a copy of your medical record is an important step in taking control of your healthcare.  Doctors are inundated with information all the time, so we’re not surprised when a new physician is reluctant to take responsibility for a pre-existing record.  Even then, it’s important for you to preserve your medical history.  Your medical record is about you, your bloodwork, your immunizations, your labwork, your continuity of care and you should have a copy for yourself.
